Description
This has been organized on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the artist's death in 1938, to provide a fresh and extensive examination of one of the most revolutionary and influential figures in the development of German expressionist art. As leader of Die Brücke, Kirchner's work has been seen, although infrequently, by American audiences since the 1930's , while in Europe a multitude of exhibitions, many of vast dimensions, have been organized. We have attempted as well to represent the many media in which Kirchner worked: oil, watercolour, gouache, pastel, drawings in crayon, ink, and pencil; of his vast production of prints, forty woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs; and two sculptures in wood.
